Representative Matters: Media/Civil Rights


Obtained substantial settlements on behalf of children brutalized while in state foster care, including one case in which the children’s foster fathers severely beat them and held them as sex slaves and another case in which the foster mother asphyxiated her foster daughter.


Vindicated, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, federal constitutional rights of children physically abused by their biological father.


Secured agreement with University of New Mexico to prevent change in use of nondenominational chapel located on main campus.


Successfully defended national business weekly against libel and invasion-of-privacy claims brought by failed company and its CEO.


Persuaded New Mexico Supreme Court to recognize the right of nonprofit corporation’s members to examine the corporation’s legal bills.


Achieved unsealing of litigation materials ranging from “confidential” governmental settlement agreements to the deposition of the archbishop in priest sex abuse cases.


Successfully opposed closure of courtrooms in locally notorious criminal cases.


Helped defend local daily newspapers against antitrust suit filed by suburban weekly.

Acted as local counsel in defense of libel actions brought against nationwide publications by Aretha Franklin, Carl Wilson, Carolyn Condit, and others.
