Rodey Attorney Selected for Labor-Management Relations Board
February, 2010
Thomas L. Stahl has been selected by the Mayor of Albuquerque to serve a two-year term on the City’s Labor-Management Relations Board. An attorney with the Rodey Law Firm and the leader of Rodey’s Labor and Employment Law Section, Mr. Stahl’s professional experience and current practice are in employment and labor law, particularly the defense of employers in a wide range of employment actions, including claims of age, race, religion, sex and disability discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliatory discharge, breach of contract and defamation. Mr. Stahl also works with employers providing employer counseling and training on the legal aspects of human resource issues. Mr. Stahl is certified by the New Mexico Board of Legal Specialization as a specialist in Employment and Labor Law.

Rodey Law Firm Elects New Directors

Jennifer L. Stone and Sandra L. Beerle were elected to the Board of Directors of the Rodey Law Firm on January 27, 2010.
Ms. Stone’s practice concentrates on the representation of hospitals, insurers, medical groups, healthcare professionals and other healthcare entities. She assists clients with healthcare transactions, regulatory advice, medical staff issues, compliance issues, behavioral health issues, HIPAA, clinical research, and healthcare litigation. Before joining Rodey, she served as general counsel and a deputy cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Health. She received her law degree from the University of New Mexico School of law in 1991, graduating cum laude.
Ms. Beerle practices in the Litigation Department’s health law section, with a focus in litigating professional and managed care liability claims on behalf of hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, physicians, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals. Her experience also includes general negligence and personal injury defense. She received her law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2002, graduating magna cum laude.

Rodey Lawyer Elected to Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas Board of Directors

John P. Salazar has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas. Mr. Salazar was elected by the Bank’s at-large membership to fill a two-year term. An attorney with the Rodey Law Firm, his professional experience and current practice are in real estate, land use and development law.
“I believe the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas performs a vital function in providing liquidity to our nation's community banks. This is especially important now, as we strive to strengthen the American economy and create jobs,” Mr. Salazar said. “The fact that the Bank is involved in affordable housing and community economic development initiatives demonstrates that the Bank is committed to make certain that other deserving segments of our society are also given the opportunity to participate in improving their economic condition. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the discussions on how best to advance these and other worthwhile goals of the Bank.”
Mr. Salazar completed his undergraduate studies at the University of New Mexico, and received his law degree at Stanford Law School.

Catherine T. Goldberg has been elected to the Board of Directors of Albuquerque Economic Development. Ms. Goldberg is a partner and shareholder in the Rodey Law Firm. She is a member of the firm’s Business Department and serves on the firm’s Executive Committee. Ms. Goldberg was awarded her law degree magna cum laude from the University of New Mexico School of Law, where she was inducted into membership in the order of the coif, in 1975.
Albuquerque Economic Development (AED) is a private, non-profit membership organization whose mission is to recruit business and industry to generate quality job opportunities in the Albuquerque metro area.

Rodey Lawyer Named Fellow of the American Bar Foundation

John P. (Jack) Burton has been selected as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Membership in the Fellows is limited to one-third of one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction. Mr. Burton is a director and shareholder in the Rodey Law Firm, and the leader of the firm’s Land Use and Real Estate Practice Group. Mr. Burton is also a Uniform Law Commissioner. He received his law degree from the Harvard Law School in 1968.
Rodey now has five Fellows in its ranks: John D. Robb, Bruce Hall, John P. Salazar, Mr. Burton and Andrew G. Schultz.

New HIPAA Regulations Seminar

Rodey Law Firm is offering a seminar for small business owners, nonprofit executive directors, office managers, human resources managers and directors, compliance officers, practice administrators, and chief operations officers. HIPAA 2010: Broad, Aggressive, Headed Your Way in February will be held on Thursday, January 7th from 8:00 a.m. until noon at the State Bar of New Mexico Auditorium, 5121 Masthead NE, in Albuquerque. Too many business owners and executives have made the mistake of thinking the HIPAA regulations don’t apply to them. Some have been fined; some have been jailed. The new regulations are being more broadly applied in 2010 and they contain more severe penalties for noncompliance. This seminar will provide the tools and information needed to navigate these regulations.

Rodey Attorney Receives ACLU’s Cooperating Attorney of the Year Award

At the Bill of Rights Celebration on Saturday, September 26th, the ACLU of New Mexico presented Charles (Kip) Purcell with their Cooperating Attorney of the Year Award. The award is given each year to a New Mexico attorney who assists the ACLU with litigation and/or other activities.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Purcell is a partner with the Rodey Law Firm, and a member of the firm’s Health Law practice group. His practice focuses on tort litigation, insurance litigation, media law, personal injury, products liability, medical and legal malpractice, civil rights litigation, appellate litigation, and general litigation. He is President of the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government and Vice-President of Equal Access to Justice.

Rodey Wins High Stakes Defense Verdict and Appeal in Alleged Faulty Seatbelt Buckle Case.

Bruce Hall has been selected as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. Mr. Hall is a partner and shareholder in the Rodey Law Firm. He has tried jury and non-jury cases at all levels of state and federal courts in New Mexico. Mr. Hall received his law degree from Harvard University graduating magna cum laude, in 1967.

Rodey Attorney Receives State Bar’s Highest Honor

John P. Salazar received the Justice Pamela B. Minzner Professionalism Award from the State Bar of New Mexico on July 10th, 2009 at the Bar’s Annual Meeting. Named for the late Pamela B. Minzner, New Mexico Supreme Court Justice, the award is given to an attorney who, over a long and distinguished legal career, has by his or her ethical and personal conduct, exemplified for his or her fellow attorneys, the epitome of professionalism. Recipients of this award are selected with special care, as this is the highest award given by the State Bar. Mr. Salazar was presented with the award in recognition of his outstanding professional conduct over the last 40 years and for his involvement in the Albuquerque community through his extensive service on the boards of many significant community organizations.
Mr. Salazar is the leader of Rodey’s Land Use and Real Estate Practice Group. He served on Rodey’s Executive Committee and chaired the firm’s Business Department for many years. His practice focuses on real estate, land use and development, and eminent domain law. He has received the highest rating from Martindale-Hubbell and he is listed in Best Lawyers in America, Chambers & Partners, and Super Lawyers.
