Rodey Lawyer Appointed to ULC Drafting Committee
John P. (Jack) Burton has been appointed by the Uniform Law Commission (ULC) as a member of the Drafting Committee on Amendments to the Model Tribal Secured Transactions Act.
He is also a member of the ULC’s Drafting Committee on the Model Tribal Probate Code and its Committee on Liaison with American Indian Tribes and Nations.
Mr. Burton is a Director in the Santa Fe office of the Rodey Law Firm. He has a state-wide, multi-disciplined, commercial practice involving transactions, alternative dispute resolution, and litigation in federal and state courts, and legislative representation. Rodey Law Firm Elects New Directors
Robert L. Lucero, Denise M. Chanez, Richard E. Hatch and Perry E. Bendicksen, III were elected to the Board of Directors of the Rodey Law Firm on January 21, 2015.
Mr. Lucero practices in the Business Department with an emphasis on real estate, land use and finance law. He assists clients throughout all phases of real estate development - from acquisition and financing, to securing entitlements, to leasing and disposition. He also represents business clients before administrative bodies and the courts and is admitted to practice before all New Mexico state and federal courts, as well as before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Ms. Chanez practices in the Litigation Department with an emphasis on health law and medical malpractice. She also has experience in the areas of media law, employment, civil rights, education, personal injury, and general insurance defense.
Mr. Hatch practices in the Litigation Department with an emphasis on medical malpractice defense litigation. He also practices in the areas of health law, wrongful death, product liability and general insurance defense.
Mr. Bendicksen is a member of the firm’s Business Department. He has extensive experience in securities and finance transactions. He regularly represents buyers and sellers in mergers and acquisitions, technology companies and their investors, and securities issuers and underwriters. He represents private equity funds, venture capital funds, and other collective investment vehicles in their formation and in their investments in portfolio companies. He also structures project finance transactions and public-private partnerships. He has represented numerous companies in private placements of their debt and equity securities, including preparation of disclosure documents and qualification for state and local registration exemptions.
Rodey Lawyer Elected to Board of Albuquerque Economic Development
Justin A. Horwitz has been elected to the Board of Directors of Albuquerque Economic Development (AED). Mr. Horwitz is a Director in the Rodey Law Firm and the Chairman of Rodey’s Business Department. He has substantial experience with a variety of economic development initiatives including industrial revenue bonds, public improvement district bonds and tax increment for development bonds, and transactions involving the local economic development act. Mr. Horwitz also serves as counsel on public finance matters and has experience in the issuance of a variety of governmental obligations.
AED is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to recruit business and industry and help local companies grow and generate quality job opportunities in the Albuquerque metro area. AED provides confidential assistance to businesses considering the area for expansion and new investment. Since its creation in 1960, AED has recruited more than 200 companies and 25,000 jobs to the Albuquerque metro area.
Rodey Lawyer Appointed to Probate Court Rules Committee

The Probate Court Rules Committee is charged with developing and recommending new procedural rules for use in probate courts and for reviewing and recommending amendments to, the existing probate court forms.
Rodey Lawyer Inducted as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America
Scott D. Gordon has become a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. Mr. Gordon is a Director at the Rodey Law Firm and former Chair of the Litigation Department. He is a board-certified specialist in Civil Trials and in Employment and Labor Law. Since 1986, Mr. Gordon has been first chair trial attorney in numerous trials including trials of discrimination, wrongful termination, breach of contract and personal injury claims. He is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Civil Trial Advocate and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has served as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law and is on the faculty for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
The Litigation Counsel of America is an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society. Membership is limited to 3,500 Fellows, representing less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. The purpose of the LCA is to recognize deserving, experienced, and highly qualified lawyers. Fellows are selected and invited into Fellowship after being evaluated for effectiveness and accomplishment in litigation and trial work, along with ethical reputation.
Rodey Lawyer Appointed to Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel
Brenda M. Saiz has been appointed to serve a three-year term as a member of the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Panel of the United States District Court for New Mexico.
Ms. Saiz is a Director in the Albuquerque office of the Rodey Law Firm. She practices in the Litigation Department with an emphasis on trucking law and professional liability. Her areas of practice also include product liability, wrongful death, and insurance defense litigation, including bad faith.
In 1988 New Mexico voters approved a constitutional amendment creating a hybrid system of judicial selection that includes merit selection, partisan elections, and retention elections.

Rodey Attorney Receives UNM Law School Distinguished Achievement Award
Edward Ricco, an attorney with the Rodey Law Firm, was presented the University of New Mexico School of Law Distinguished Achievement Award on Friday, October 24th at UNM Law School’s Distinguished Achievement Awards Dinner. Award recipients were selected for their substantial contributions to the UNM School of Law, their distinguished careers and their service to the legal community and the state of New Mexico.
Mr. Ricco is a director in the Rodey Law Firm and an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he has taught and coached students in the area of appellate advocacy. He has handled appeals in the state and federal courts in a wide variety of legal areas, including civil rights, constitutional law, antitrust, commercial law, torts, administrative law, intellectual property, workers' compensation and other subjects. He is a Board certified specialist in appellate practice and a fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.
Rodey Attorney To Be Named Business Lawyer of the Year
John P. Salazar, an attorney with the Rodey Law Firm, has been voted Business Lawyer of the Year by the Executive Board of the State Bar of New Mexico’s Business Law Section. The Business Lawyer of the Year Award recognizes an attorney who has made significant contributions to the practice of business law in New Mexico and is “the model of a New Mexico business lawyer”. The recipient of this award must demonstrate the utmost professionalism, integrity and superior legal service, as well as service to the public. The award ceremony will take place on Friday, November 7th at the State Bar.
Mr. Salazar’s professional experience and current practice are in real estate, land use and development law, as well as municipal and administrative law. He has substantial litigation experience, particularly in eminent domain, in which his litigation practice is currently focused.

Rodey Lawyer Re-Elected President
of the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association
Denise M. Chanez has been re-elected President of the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association. Ms. Chanez has been serving in that capacity since July of 2013.
Ms. Chanez is an associate at the Rodey Law Firm. She practices in the Litigation Department with an emphasis on health law and medical malpractice. Ms. Chanez also has experience in the areas of employment, civil rights, education, personal injury, and media law.
Ms. Chanez received her J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2006, graduating magna cum laude.
With approximately 300 members, the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association is the largest minority bar association in New Mexico. The association’s mission is to promote the education and development of Hispanic legal professionals.
Rodey Attorney To Be Honored by New Mexico Foundation for Open Government
Charles (Kip) Purcell, an attorney with the Rodey Law Firm, has been selected to receive an award from the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government (FOG). The Dixon First Amendment Award was created in memory of FOG co-founder and longtime board member William S. Dixon. Mr. Dixon, formerly an attorney with the Rodey Law Firm, was a leading defender of the First Amendment and the state’s access laws. The award will be presented to Mr. Purcell on October 1st at FOG’s annual “Your Right To Know Luncheon”. Mr. Purcell, a former president and longtime board member of FOG, has written or assisted in the drafting of numerous FOG amicus briefs that have shaped open government law in New Mexico.
Mr. Purcell is a director in the Rodey Law Firm where his practice focuses on tort, insurance, civil rights, appellate and general litigation as well as media law, personal injury, products liability and medical and legal malpractice. Mr. Purcell received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1984 graduating magna cum laude.
Rodey Attorney Honored by the State Bar
Catherine T. Goldberg, an attorney with the Rodey Law Firm, was honored at a special reception on July 19th during the Annual Meeting of the State Bar of New Mexico.
The State Bar presented Ms. Goldberg with the Justice Pamela B. Minzner Professionalism Award. The award, named for the late Pamela B. Minzner, New Mexico Supreme Court Justice, is the highest award given by the State Bar. Ms. Goldberg received the award in recognition of her outstanding professional conduct over many years of practice and for her involvement in the Albuquerque community through her service on the boards of many community organizations.
Ms. Goldberg is a director in the Rodey Law Firm and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. She practices in the areas of real estate, financings, banking, foreclosures, commercial law, leases, contracts and corporate law. She received her law degree from the University of New Mexico in 1975 graduating magna cum laude.
John Donald Robb Jr. Passes Away at the Age of 90
It is with great sadness that the lawyers and staff of the Rodey Law Firm bid goodbye to John D. Robb, our friend, colleague and distinguished member of our firm for over 63 years, who passed away on July 13, 2014. His memory will comfort us and give us strength and his legacy as a person and as a great lawyer will continue to inspire us.
